I just spent 30 mins on hold last night with Support to no avail. I was so pumped when this first changed my entire viewing habit’s tremendously. I too had several titles show up in 4K at the movies anywhere launch but then at some point revert back to HD. I like many others above am also frustrated about this. Thank you for all of the research you did. So if my account is unlinked I will still have a way to play 4k or 4k UHD somewhere.

I will likely buy my movies on iTunes since Apple TV versions of Prime and Vudu offer 4k or 4k UHD.

I will no longer buy movies from VUDU, Alphabet Play, Amazon, Microsoft, Fandango or any other retailer that does not offer free 4k upgrade. (Have not tried this or the gifting of 4k)īottom Line: I will get all 4k Harry Potters at some point. If I unlink my iTunes account, the movies will still show up but new purchased will not so unlinking may not be an option unless I remove it from my library. The question is how? Some movies are like brand new purchase. Those no longer show up as 4k and I too must decide if I wish to repurchase them. Possible Solution: At one time I had all Harry Potters showing up as 4k because I was dumb enough to buy through VUDU. However, you will find outside of this agreement, Apple has a larger selection of 4k movies. Somehow they have an agreement to distribute the 4k versions for Disney.

Whether movie studios can override any reciprocity agreements between retailers. In most cases I've seen them show up in 4k on Apple. (For example, The movie may be available in 4k through VUDU and also through Apple. What is not clear is if the movie studio also gets a say. In other words, it's between Apple and another party or parties. ALL reciprocal agreements fall outside of Movies Anywhere's domain.Example: Dreamworks and Warner Animation have a handful of movies that are ineligible in any format. Even movies part of the participating studios have exempt titles. Lionsgate, MGM, Warner Animation, and Paramount are not a part of Movies Anywhere. There is always a possibility that any participating retailer or studio may pull out thus leaving you with a library of "Movies Somewhere" Regardless of where you purchased the movie. You must reauthorize Movies Anywhere every two years. If the movie is purchased in 4k and is not available in 4k on Apple, then it will not show up in 4k on iTunes. If the movie is purchased in 4k and there is no reciprocal 4k agreement, it will show up in iTunes as HD.If there is a 4k reciprocal agreement, and that movie was purchased in 4k on another service, then it will show up in 4k on Apple's service.Any movies purchased in HD on a participating MA service will only show in iTunes on HD.To say this makes the whole AppleTV a POS is preposterous. Before calling the Apple TV a POS please refer to the terms and conditions.
